GFYD supports solutions at the state and federal level to address the college affordability crisis including serious student loan reform. Conventional wisdom holds that higher education is one of the clearest pathways to the middle class for most Americans. Yet, college is increasingly becoming unaffordable for a large section of the United States population and a college degree no longer guarantees a career that pays a living wage. More students find themselves taking on large student loans, either to pay for college or to obtain advanced degrees, as a gamble on an uncertain future. With student loan debt approaching $1.6 trillion, we believe lawmakers must work swiftly to address the growing crisis that is hampering economic growth and harming an entire generation of Americans.
GFYD supports solutions at the local, state, and federal level to combat the growing global climate crisis. It is undeniable that global temperatures are rising at an alarming rate, that our oceans are warming, and that sea levels are rising. We need look no farther than to communities in Chesapeake, Norfolk, and Virginia Beach to see the impacts of climate change. Tangier Island, long a hub of the commercial fishing industry in Virginia, is rapidly sinking into the Chesapeake Bay. We believe that lawmakers must take bold, progressive action to halt the impacts of climate change immediately including supporting many of the principles of the Green New Deal and other efforts to deal with this growing climate emergency.
GFYD supports common-sense gun safety measures at the local, state, and federal level to keep our communities safe from the reckless actions of dangerous criminals. These include red flag laws to protect domestic abuse survivors from risk of imminent harm, universal background checks to ensure that guns do not fall into the wrong hands, and mandatory gun safety courses to ensure that gun owners know how to handle a firearm properly. For too many years, we have had to bury friends and family members, particularly little children, because of senseless gun-related tragedies. While we support lawful gun ownership consistent with the Second Amendment, we believe lawmakers must do more to protect our communities from violence.
GFYD supports finding collaborative solutions at the local, state, and federal level to support safe, affordable housing for all Virginians. Some of the highest eviction rates in the United States are right here in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We believe that lawmakers at all levels must do more to ensure that safeguards are in place to make eviction a last resort for landlords. Furthermore, we believe that lawmakers should find ways to encourage home ownership among millennials and lower-income Virginians.
